These days a lot of men and women choose include waxing as part of their grooming regimen. Any part of the body can be waxed: eyebrows, upper lip, underarms, legs, and bikini or genital area. Because of its sensitive nature, waxing must be done carefully and only by licensed professionals

Here are a few tips to prepare you for the experience if you are a first-timer to waxing.

Before

Choose a licensed waxer to perform the procedure. Make sure you are comfortable with the facility and the waxer.

Pick a less invasive area for your first appointment. Example, start with your leg before getting a Brazilian.

Shower and exfoliate the area you want to get waxed.

Skip using deodorant (if getting an underarm wax), oils and lotions.

Make sure the hairs are about a quarter of an inch long. If you are used to shaving, wait at least 2-3 weeks before going for a wax. If your hair is too long, allow the waxer to trim the hair to the right length. Waxing long hairs can cause you more pain.

If you are still worried about the pain, take a painkiller 30 minutes to an hour before your appointment. Avoid Aspirin and Ibuprofen because they are known blood-thinners.

For women, skin is more sensitive around the time of your menstrual period. Avoid getting a wax 2-3 days before or after your period.

Wear loose and comfortable clothing and underwear to avoid discomfort after your appointment.

After

Refrain from touching the freshly waxed skin because this can cause irritation, or even infection.

Apply a cold compress or cream to reduce swelling and redness after your the procedure.

Refrain from exercising 2-4 hours after your appointment.

Avoid tanning, sunbathing, and going to a sauna after the procedure. Heat may irritate the skin, which is still sensitive.

Refrain from any sexual activity for at least 24-48 hours after getting a bikini or Brazilian wax.

Short and quick showers are preferable to long baths after the procedure. Wait at least four hours after your appointment before washing or taking a shower.

Avoid wearing tight clothing and underwear for a few days.

Two full days after the procedure, lightly exfoliate the area that was waxed.
